The Beauty Of Orchids

Rose, tulips, carnation, calla lily… These are flowers we often see in weddings and commonly seen in gardens. There is one beautiful flower with blooms that are often colorful and often fragrant, known as orchid.

Orchids are epiphytes, it is a plant that grows non-parasitically upon another plant, and derives its moisture and nutrients from the air, rain, and sometimes from debris accumulating around it instead of the structure it is fastened to. Naturally, they grow in the jungle clinging to different trees and driftwood. It can be fastened to posts, walls and home railings.

Many are collecting orchids for their scent. Also, most people cultivate orchids for the enjoyment of the flowers. Here in the Philippines, Philippines Horticultural Society, Inc. a non profit organization for orchid lovers. They advocate conservation of orchids through conducting seminars and training. This is their Facebook page for more information.

The Wonderful Island of Caramoan

Last summer, our group decided to explore the wonderful island of Caramoan. Caramoan Island is located in the lower eastern part of Camarines Sur in the Bicol region of the Philippine archipelago. It’s a first-class municipality, a rugged place of land extending into the waters of the Maqueda Channel on the north and east and Lagonoy Gulf on the south. It has a  4,000- hectare limestone forest well endowed with a rich diversity of flora and fauna.  It boasts of having perfect white sand beaches, tranquil lakes, deep caves, coves and rich marine life.

It became intensely popular due to the famed american reality show Survivor series, which tapes their episodes in this beautiful island.

Going there, we rode a van from Naga Terminal going to Port Sabang. From the port, we rode a 2 hour trigger boat ride for Php 120.00 to Guijalo Port. Then, we rode a 30 minute tricycle ride to Paniman Beach. We stayed in Kuya Ramil’s house for Php 350.00 per night for an airconditioned room.

You can contact them here: Ramil and Myrna Cruel:  0907 435 1962  This is their facebook page, but its better to text them because this account was set up by people who have visited them and wanted to help them promote their livelihood (like us!!). They are very accommodating and gracious.

The Art of Bonsai Propagation

Bonsai propagation was introduced to us by the Japanese. In their country, the word bonsai literally means tree in a tray. In making bonsai, special methods is used to control its growth.

One of the main purposes of propagating bonsai trees is for aesthetics and recreational purposes. It can be displayed inside the house for a natural feel. It can be a good source of income because it is one of the most expensive collections with prices up to millions of pesos.

In the Philippines, the most commonly used species for propagation are kamuning, camachile, bantigue, mulawin, aguho, bougainvillea, argao, bayabas, santan and ficus.

The Japanese tradition describes different commonly used styles. These include formal upright, informal upright, slanting, semi-cascade, cascade, raft, literati, and group/forest.

Our company offers a seminar workshop on bonsai propagation for beginners and experts alike. You will be taught first hand on the art of bonsai propagation!! Sign up for our next batch now!
