Filipino Culture That Make Us Financially Broke!
The Filipino Culture is very rich with majestic traditions that we can be proud of! Culture of Bayanihan, po at Opo and the culture of hospitality. But I think we have a culture that has a great effect on the way we think about money. Many famous Filipinos are giving advice on personal finance. Some of them give their insights through blogs, others in form of a book and others are in part of seminars. But even though many are “informed” in the dos and don’ts of finance still many people are struggling to be financially free. Here are some of the cultures of Filipinos that make us struggle financially:
- Our “Crab” mentality
“Crab” mentality is attributed to the motions of the crab in a basket that wants to strive just to reach the top while pushing others in the bottom. The Filipinos often get the characteristics of a crab also in the world of finance. We want to put others down by boasting things we have. As Filipinos we grew up in the culture with very unwise spending habits. Our culture taught us that being rich means having extravagant houses, nice collection of cars, nice set of clothes and very high tech gadgets. We know that this is not the true essence of being “rich” but we do it anyway because of our notion that this would make me happy and contented and just to impress others with our lifestyle. We wanted people to notice our things just to look more superior with others.
- My piece of advice, do not but things you don’t need just to impress people you don’t like especially using the money you don’t have. Keep away from credit cards because the interest rate of it is a whopping 36% per annum. This would bury you alive in debt!!!
- Our “Ningas Kugon” mentality
“Ningas Kugon” mentality means that we are only performing excellent at the start. We apply this mentality in our finances. We are great in saving for two months but after we see a sale in the mall or see a promo fare in our dream tourist destination or seeing our dream cellphone in the store we would spend our savings just to get what we wanted. We are also good in having “New Year Resolutions” and one of that is to save and invest regularly but we cannot lived it up for the whole year.
- My piece of advice, save and invest on a regular basis. Have a force saving or investing that cannot be withdrawn easily like having a VUL insurance or Mutual fund that is automatically debited on your payroll account.
- Our “Colonial” Mentality
“Colonial Mentality” let us think that Filipinos are inferior that others especially Americans. Americans conquered us not just physically but intellectually that resulted in our great admiration for their country. Because of this Filipinos are brainwashed that we can be prosperous in our nation. This resulted in Braindrain that resulted in slow growth of our economy. Talented minds served other nations rather that serving our Filipino nation.
- My piece of advice, search for opportunities to grow be wealthy in your own nation. There are so many things that we could do together just to lift up our nation. Do business here in the Philippines, other nations are going here just to build up their business but we Filipinos cannot see the goldmines in our backyard.
- Our “Bahala na” mentality
“Bahala na” is a phrase that literally means “Bathala na” or God will provide. This phrase shows our faith and assurance of the blessings of God but this phrase also leads in laziness of Filipinos and lack of preparedness in our retirement. God did not want us to be lazy nor rely on him alone. It is written in the book of Hebrews that Faith without action is dead. This means that as we trust on him let us do our part. Learn to prepare for the rainy season, work as if serving the Lord and live simply. Do not rely on your family members that they will provide for your needs when you get old because the truth is they won’t because at that time they will also have a family to care for.
- My piece of advice, understand the relying on God means doing your part. Let Him show his mightiness by blessing the works of your hands. Learn to earn, save and invest in a Godly way and I’m sure that He will provide richly according to His glorious riches. But don’t forget to be a channel of His blessings when He already blessed you.
Yes, you!! You can be financially intelligent. Start practicing these tips now.
The Beauty Of Orchids
Rose, tulips, carnation, calla lily… These are flowers we often see in weddings and commonly seen in gardens. There is one beautiful flower with blooms that are often colorful and often fragrant, known as orchid.
Orchids are epiphytes, it is a plant that grows non-parasitically upon another plant, and derives its moisture and nutrients from the air, rain, and sometimes from debris accumulating around it instead of the structure it is fastened to. Naturally, they grow in the jungle clinging to different trees and driftwood. It can be fastened to posts, walls and home railings.
Many are collecting orchids for their scent. Also, most people cultivate orchids for the enjoyment of the flowers. Here in the Philippines, Philippines Horticultural Society, Inc. a non profit organization for orchid lovers. They advocate conservation of orchids through conducting seminars and training. This is their Facebook page for more information.

The Wonderful Island of Caramoan
Last summer, our group decided to explore the wonderful island of Caramoan. Caramoan Island is located in the lower eastern part of Camarines Sur in the Bicol region of the Philippine archipelago. It’s a first-class municipality, a rugged place of land extending into the waters of the Maqueda Channel on the north and east and Lagonoy Gulf on the south. It has a 4,000- hectare limestone forest well endowed with a rich diversity of flora and fauna. It boasts of having perfect white sand beaches, tranquil lakes, deep caves, coves and rich marine life.
It became intensely popular due to the famed american reality show Survivor series, which tapes their episodes in this beautiful island.
Great ocean adventures for kayakers, snorkle and scuba dive to experience the diverse marine life, trek and search for the enigmatic lagoon, rock climb the limestone cliffs, explore the caves or just star gaze at night.

Going there, we rode a van from Naga Terminal going to Port Sabang. From the port, we rode a 2 hour trigger boat ride for Php 120.00 to Guijalo Port. Then, we rode a 30 minute tricycle ride to Paniman Beach. We stayed in Kuya Ramil’s house for Php 350.00 per night for an airconditioned room.
You can contact them here: Ramil and Myrna Cruel: 0907 435 1962 This is their facebook page, but its better to text them because this account was set up by people who have visited them and wanted to help them promote their livelihood (like us!!). They are very accommodating and gracious.

During our three day stay, we roamed Paniman beach, and then went on an island hopping tour. We went to different beautiful islands at Caramoan such as Lahus, Matukad, Tinago, Minalahos and Catanhawan.
